I'm definitely moving out

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2005
I moved here in 2002 despite the fact that I'm an older grad student. Since the beginning, I have periodically had problems with both Melrose and now Atlantis management staff but I put up with them because I've landed quite a sweet deal here (e.g., living by myself 30 months out of 3 years in a top-floor 2BR apt). However, I'm finally moving out in the next couple of weeks because:
- High rent: They'd raise my rent to a ridiculously high rate of almost $600/mth next year (and I'll have a roommate). Combined with the high utility rate (my winter bill went up to $125/month), I'd rather go find a single apt for less than or equal to that cost and with the same amenities.
- Poor treatment of tenants: They attempted to move me into another apartment to make space for new tenants within 2 weeks' notice last summer, despite the fact that I'm a model tenant (e.g., always paying rents on time; being as quiet as a mouse). I had to fight with them and refused to move. I won but felt annoyed and upset, wasting my time too.
- No gate code access: Since they cut my landline phone (didn't know about the Phone Addendum that entitled me some money back when this place changed management), I had to switch to my out-of-town cell phone. Since then, everytime I have a guest, I have to walk down to the gate and let my guest in because the management refused to encode my phone number into the gate system ("it's long distance").
- Inconvenience : I changed my phone numbers 8 months ago and updated it TWICE with 2 separate staff members. I just found out that they haven't ever updated my phone in their database and therefore, never called me when I received mailed packets for the past months. Only because I had tracking numbers that I knew my packets had been delivered.
- Red tape: Last month, I was running late and accidentally locked myself out of my apartment before grabbing my keys on the way out. I live in Bldg 14 so it was a few minutes' walk to the office. I called the staff and asked for their assistance. She asked me to walk to the office first, fill out some form, and then the office staff would go to my building and let me in. Apparently their lock-out policy had changed in a more bureacratic direction. I explained to them that I was in an extreme hurry and whatever forms they needed me to sign, I could do that on site. The staff wasn't flexible at all. I ended up wasting my time walking to the office to get her, signing a form to say that I have ID and live there (') and going back to my apartment. The whole incident could have been resolved in less than half of the time.
- Picture keycard: The management insisted that you got a key card with your picture on it. This is not a safe practice and they have no legal rights to force you. So refuse to oblige. I refused and they couldn't do a thing about that.
I'm lucky that I didn't have any major maintenance problems during my stay here.
